Biodiversity monitoring in rocky shores: Challenges of devising a globally applicable and cost-effective protocol

چکیده

Large-scale coastal monitoring programs that focus on long-term inter-annual and seasonal community variability are rare mostly because they costly, logistically complex require coordination by groups of dedicated scientists. The Marine Biodiversity Observation Network (MBON) is currently developing a regional collaboration throughout the American continent to collect biological data in habitats using common methodologies sharing best practices. goal this paper compare two survey methods with contrasting field time demands (i.e. situ collected vs. photoquadrats), identify scales at which may differ, determine convenience suitability for their use large-scale standardized biodiversity studies rocky intertidal shores. Visual quadrat (VQ) was compared obtained from photographs those same quadrats (PQ) digitally analyzed three levels within sites during four different times year. Analysis site showed effect all shore an only low level both sites. PQ method reliable, cheap efficient tool study communities. It capable detecting spatial temporal as VQ various including tidal height, year site. We suggest mid sampling zone across latitudes basis having higher diversity than high intertidal, more level, being affected climate change through changes air (temperature wind) ocean (warming acidification). This provides empirical evidence simple, low-cost low-tech offer required information need.

Whole-Community Facilitation Regulates Biodiversity on Patagonian Rocky Shores

BACKGROUND Understanding the factors that generate and maintain biodiversity is a central goal in ecology. While positive species interactions (i.e., facilitation) have historically been underemphasized in ecological research, they are increasingly recognized as playing important roles in the evolution and maintenance of biodiversity. Dominant habitat-forming species (foundation species) buffer...

An Efficient and Cost Effective Protocol for In Vitro Propagation of Pineapple

An efficient and cost effective protocol for in vitro propagation of Pineapple (Ananas comosus var. Queen) has been developed. In the proliferation stage, agar based Murashige and Skoog (MS) media was supplemented with 3.0 mg/l benzyleaminopurine (BAP), 0.5 mg/l indole acetic acid (IAA) and 50 mg/l adenine sulphate as RBC design experiment. Two approaches were taken to reduce the chemical cost ...

A Novel and Cost-Effective Monitoring Approach for Outcomes in an Australian Biodiversity Conservation Incentive Program

We report on the design and implementation of ecological monitoring for an Australian biodiversity conservation incentive scheme - the Environmental Stewardship Program. The Program uses competitive auctions to contract individual land managers for up to 15 years to conserve matters of National Environmental Significance (with an initial priority on nationally threatened ecological communities)...

Spatial variability in community composition on a granite breakwater versus natural rocky shores: lack of microhabitats suppresses intertidal biodiversity.

Strong differences have been observed between the assemblages on artificial reefs and on natural hard-bottom habitats worldwide, but little is known about the mechanisms that cause contrasting biodiversity patterns. We examined the influence of spatial attributes in relation to both biogenic and topographic microhabitats, in the distribution and composition of intertidal species on both artific...
